DRUM SET
Beginners are introduced to the fundamental concepts of rhythmic subdivision & time
keeping, & are required to receive grounding in rudimental hand
technique, and reading for snare drum. In fact, all students are strongly encouraged
to
learn how to read music. With younger students, especially, I like
to emphasize ways to structure practice time. This is a discipline that pays
off in short
order.
Advanced students may want to focus on one (or
more) of the following skills: School band pieces; technical
issues, such
as improving 4-way independence or playing to a click; reading,
transcribing; understanding the rhythmic concept (finding
the groove) of a particular style of music; improvising.
Maybe you’ve been playing for a while, and have just hit
a “wall”, and are looking for some motivation and
inspiration - some new ideas and concepts. I can help you to
kick-start your creativity so you can be on your way to the next
level!
Rock, Funk, Jazz, R&B, & Latin Percussion
I also teach Afro-Cuban percussion technique and rhythm: Familiarization with
many of the percussion instruments in the Latin percussion family; introduction
to the popular rhythms in the style. Learn conga technique, & ways
to access the heavy syncopation that is the trademark of Afro-Cuban music.
Crossing over with these instruments to other styles.
